Why you should eat farm-fresh eggs

Since moving to a farm earlier this year, it has become crystal-clear that we should have ALWAYS eaten farm-fresh eggs. I never really enjoyed eggs before starting out farm and now I know why. Store-bought eggs don’t even taste remotely similar to farm-fresh eggs, they are like the sad (much older) emaciated sickly brother of happy and perky farm-fresh eggs.

Here are the top reasons you should quit store-bought eggs and get your hands on some fresh-fresh beauties

1. Storage and Shelf life

I am really sorry to break it to you, but the eggs in your fridge are old….. really old! Store-bought eggs can be over a month old already before they hit your shopping cart. With farm-fresh eggs you can eat them immediately, but they are also happy sitting on your counter for up to a month (if you don’t remove the egg bloom by scrubbing).

2. Nutrition

With fresh-fresh eggs you get the benefit of all the things those hens are devouring outside. Grass, vegetable scraps, corn, flowers. This awesome natural hen diet delivers eggs that are mega-rich in nutrients and lower in cholesterol, saturate fat, and lots of yummy omega-3 fatty acids. If you are on a primal or paleo diet, you especially want all of your protein to be packed with nutrition, so skip the store and spring for the real thing.

The flavor you get from a farm-raised chicken egg versus a store-bought egg is unbelievable. I felt myself getting really sad when our chickens stopped laying this year, because I missed having a perfect fried egg on my toast in the morning. Farm-fresh egg flavor cannot be beat by store-bought eggs, the depth of nutrition within the sunny yolk really shines. I always say that you can tell a happy chicken by it’s meat and especially it’s eggs.

4. Support Local Farms

Farming is a really tough gig. With profit margins down all over the country for farmers in the last decade, farmers need our help more than ever to make sure we have access to quality vegetable, eggs and meat. Beyond their eggs being delicious, farmers work really hard and would probably love to sell you some eggs if they have a surplus.


How to find local farm eggs?
I have seen farm-fresh eggs listed online in a number of places. It’s always good to buy from a reputable farm or someone you know, so do your due-diligence (although I doubt anyone’s making a gold-mine scamming people with “farm-fresh” eggs). You can find eggs online on Facebook groups, Facebook marketplace, offerup, maybe even NextDoor.

Eggs at the store are about 2-8 dollars a dozen. Farm fresh eggs are between 2 and 8 dollars a dozen. For all the added nutrition and benefits, you deserve farm-fresh eggs in your life.
